I have a Leupold on mine.  They are well made, good glass, and have a good warranty.

I would go with the Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm a lot of African hunters with those big guns use that scope.I run one on my 308 lever good scope.

I’m looking for a hunting scope for a 458 Socom myself. I want a bit more magnification than 4x in the top end. Here are a couple that I’m considering...

The Leupold VX-R has some interesting features. The ballistic firedot reticule has a couple of hash marks below the dot that could be used for extended ranges, the Socom isn’t exactly a flat shooter so a guy would need to work them out in the field. It has daylight visible illumination with a motion sensor to deactivate the illuminated dot, decent eye relief, and is fairly light weight. I'm not a big Leupold fan these days as I think their quality has gone downhill but they do repair them quickly.

From what I've read this scope has very good glass but the internals are questionable.

From what I hear, they get a lot of practice...

I have a Vortex Viper 2-7 with the the hold-over reticule.  With the trajectory of the .458 a holdover reference might well be in order for rapid shots out to 200 yds.

This is excellent advice. A very good scope at a reasonable price. I'm thinking about buying another one.

Another vote for the Leupold 1.5-5
Ten years ago I dropped a rifle out of a tree stand onto a pile of rocks.  The scope hit first and the front bell took on a nice 15-20% tilt. I returned the scope to Leupold telling them what I had done and asking for a repair price.  About 10 days later I had the scope back in perfect condition and a note saying "We appreciate the chance to serve you..."  There was no charge for the repairs!  With that type of service, they are winners in my eyes.  I've heard stories that the quality isn't what it once was, but I have not seen it.  Leupold scopes ride on all of my personal rifles.
I'm sure some of the other companies offer some great products but I'm happy with what I have.

Accupoint. Reliable, durable, great eye relief and no batteries.

I got a Nikon Omega BDC scope on my .50Beowulf.  Medium eye relief so you don't get clocked.  I ran a regular scope for a while, but if you weren't paying attention, I would notice the scope kissing my safety glasses.  Didn't want that to happen in the field.  The Nikon is pretty decent, eye relief is perfect.

Nikon monarch African is a very good scope, no bdc though.  http://swfa.com/Nikon-11-4x24-Monarch-African-30mm-Riflescope-P42350.aspx  Also the Vortex 1-4 HDs look really nice, have illum, and bdc, is a bit pricey.  http://swfa.com/Vortex-1-4x24-Razor-HD-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44590.aspx How much are you looking to spend?  I don't think current Leupolds are what they used to be.

Leupold 2-7 X vx-1.

LR reticle if you need it.

We have 3-4 or these on various rifles.

Had one of my scopes on a bunch of different calibers.
458 socom, 50 beo, 375 ruger, 338-284, 338-06.
Now it lives on a 270 win.

Never have had a problem with any of them.

+1 Worked great on 2 days hunting whitetail. 1 doe shot 80 yrds, 1 buck shot 135 yards. Scope was awesome for the price paid. $169.95 at swfa.

I'm very happy with my VX-R 3-9x50, it rivals the Trijicon 3-9x40 Accupoint as the best low light hunting scope.
