hello,

i have a project that i want to cut down a 1/12 20 inch to a carbine length barrel.  i have access to lathes and mills and am a profficient machinist of 8 years.  i have an indexing head and such.  how is everyone installing the front sight base with taper pins ensuring it lines up with the barrel extension pin.  i have a few ideas how i will do it but want to here some peoples proven ways.  does anyone have drawings of the different barrel prifoles with all the dimensions on it.

If you remove a FSB ald then replace it you have no problems just don't lose the taper pins.

Are you starting with a 20" 1/12 A1 barrel which would probably be too small (under .625) to work with in the carbine position?  Or is it some type of bull barrel that you are going to turn down to .75 for the  fsb?

Anyway, I would guess you are going to locate off of the index pin.  Should be pretty straight forward but I'm sure there are more than a few ways to jig it up.  Leitner-Wise once posted a picture of the jig they use to align FSB on their piston conversions.  If still up it would be in the archives I would guess. It was a nice setup.

well i guess i should add some more info.  i want to use a .625 frot sight base.  i measured out a 1/7 colt a2 and a 1/12 colt a1.  the a1 looked like it may work.  it was just at .625 at the front band of the FSB.  the A2 was about .620. i measured several A2's that i had and they were all about the same.  i have talked with a guy that had an A1 cut down to carbine length.  he sent it out though for the work.  im going to look in teh archives now for the pic.
