Good evening gentlemen;
I have a build question for the group, and though I believe I have solved the issue I would like your input. Upon receiving 2 E.R.Shaw barrels, I noticed that they came with the forward gas block installed with the forward hand guard brackets included between the gas block and the barrel contour step up. I was not intending to use these brackets, as I am going to use a Larue handguard on one build and something else on the other, with the intention of having the handguard going over the gas block. I removed the gas blocks and slid off the handguard brackets and then reinstalled the gas blocks. My question is this; How do you center the gas blocks gas port directly over the barrels port? Before removing the handguard brackets this alignment was automatic as the gas block just butted up against the bracket. Now with the bracket gone I had to guesstimate the spacing. Is this a super critical alignment? I would assume it is for proper gas flow. Is there a standard way of aligning these two ports? Thanks in advance for your help. You can use a dial caliper and a pencil or small tipped marker to measure the distances from the barrel buildup and gas port. Also measure the length of the gas block. Measure the distance from the front of the gas block to the gas hole in it.
Take one of those plastic speed squares and lay it on the barrel with the straight edge down the center of the gas hole in the barrel and draw a line that extends down the barrel past where the gas block stops. From there it is math and alignment. Should just be moved up the thickness of the handguard "bracket". |
