I just ordered  3 ST stripped lowers,  I want to build 2 of them for my 2 boys they are 7(soon to be 8) and 9. My question for you guys is I want to try and keep the overall weight down so they  are not to heavy any suggestions or idea's on what kind of stock, rail, etc . I'm a newbie to AR's so any help or advice would be much appreciated.

BCM 14.5 M4 - lightweight uppers with perm flash hiders.  High quality at a low price.  To keep it real light, stick with standard carbine handgaurds instead of a rail system.

I would go with Rock River Arms carbine or midlength light weight upper.  They also will throw in a chrome bolt upgrade for free at this time.  The carbine would be a little lighter due to the shorter handguards.  You could use the Magpul Moe Handguards if you wanted to add a light or verticle grip.  Or you could just add a light if you wanted to to the front sight tower or bayonet lug.  Most of the Magpul Moe stuff is pretty light, durable, and looks good.  Yes I drink the Magpul kool-aid.  I have a lot of their stuff on my Rock River, good quality at a great price.  The kids will love building their own rifles.  Good luck.

I work my AR into lifting routine. I get some looks at the gym, but extra tacticool just means extra muscles.

Lightweight uppers, deck them out with the Magpul MOE furniture. Can add accessories, etc. without the weight of rails. DSG arms has a great deal on a MOE furniture kit with buffer assembly.

well i think i am going to go with the magpul furniture kit from dsg and im undecided on what upper i should  go with, the bcm 16" standard mid lenght or the 16" standard mid lenght light weight. Is there an advantage to the M4 barrels compared to the standard barrels. I looked at the 14.5" uppers but I dont think they are legal in Alabama I think 16" is the minimum lenght barrel. If they are anymore suggestions Im all ears

Ok, so, that's a nodak upper.

Where did you get the stock, and is it aluminium or plastic?

Also, what barrel group is that?

Thanks, and good looking rifle.

ETA: Found most of it using the search feature.

The 14.5 should be legal here as long as you have the flash hider/ brake on the end  pinned and welded and the overall length comes to 16in+

And one last thing, what rear sight are you running? A1, or something like an XS?

Thanks, and good looking rifle.

Thank You.  I put a little thought into this build.  It's about as light as you can get without going NFA, plastic or swiss cheese.

The upper is a brand new original Colt 604 upper.

The stock is a brand new original Colt four position tube w/ a Colt "N" / "1" plastic car stock body.

The barrel in a brand new Bushmaster M4 barrel turned down and cut to 14.7" with perm A2 by ADCO (front sight is also original Colt A1).

I like XS same plane rear sights.

To save a little more weight I also shaved off the bayonet lug and front sling attachment. Have a new complete Colt "C" shape BCG in it, use the DuckBill grip and even the original lighter castle nut.

MOE stuff actually weighs more than the parts they replace. For a free float tube that's lighter than standard handguards, I recommend a Midwest Industries SS77 or a Troy TRX Extreme. Both have fixed top rails and can have rail sections attached where you need them so you don't need to plaster 'em with heavy rail covers. Avoid Magpul stocks if you want to keep the weight down on that front, too. Also avoid a carry handle, fixed or attachable. Using a Troy or magpul rail-mounted rear sight instead will save 5 - 7 oz. And a lightweight barrel goes without saying.
