what would cause my lmt to fail to extract a round. It is a piston gun and the bolt is being driven backward, but the bullet is not being extracted

| Could be a lot of things, you need to provide more info. What kind of ammo, or combination of ammo were you shooting (i.e. brass or steel cased)? Is your chamber clean? Does the extractor spring have good tension? What length barrel and gas system do you have? Is the extractor claw worn? What do the rims on the casings that didn't extract look like? |

My personally owned CQB MRP has never had any sort of failure. |

When he took the bolt carrier out of the gun the ejector plunger and spring fell out. What do you mean "you let him take his to the range"??? This thread is weird. | Alright here is the real story. I am not bashing LMT I personally have an MRP CQB that has run flawlessly for many hundreds of rounds. I talked my buddy into buying one last week. He shot the gun two times at work and put it up. He took HIS gun not MY gun to the range today and that is when he had the problem. I was at home on this site when he called. I tried to hurry up and post a thread to try to get some ideas of what could be causing the problem without the gun in my hands. Obviously not a good idea, but I have been around this site for long enough to know that most of the information I read here is good. I am trying to figure out how to post pics so I can show off my bad ass LMT. I don't know what is worse, asking questions about something that you don't understand, or having to explain myself to a bunch of grown ass men who were obviously born knowing everything. |

You now said you have fired a couple of hundreds rounds on [Your] LMT MRP so you do know something about it. You're aren't a newbie anymore like you claim in the 3rd post. When I fired my 1st AR(S&W MP15) for the 1st time ever last year, I knew pretty much how an AR works after that. This story is getting strange by the minute. 
edit: Average U.S. military units fires about 600 rds a year. So several hundreds of rounds is quite a bit. |

Just another possible reason.
Assuming the bolt is not falling apart on you.... Often failures to extract are caused by what is known as poor rifle timing. This means the rifle unlocks a bit early while the pressures are still to high. The high pressures cause the case to stick in the chamber quite solidly. As the extractor tries to remove the case it bends the case rim and sometimes even slips off. This can cause failure to extract. Over time this also can cause a broken extractor. In fact, I believe poorly timed rifles cause the majority of broken extractors. To check if your / your friends rifle (I can't really keep track ) has this problem look for bent rims on the bottom of the spent casings. The fix: If your rifle is having problems with timing and trying to extract early add a heavier buffer or add weight to your existing buffer to make it heavier. This will change the timing and in almost all cases fix the problem. Also, ignore the folks that jump on your back and accuse you of all manner of misfeasance and malfeasance. There is no point addressing them or defending yourself. Simply read on. Eventually you will find helpful folks. I have learned much from such folks here on this forum. |
