There is a parts diagram here on ar15.com that lists all the parts...

http://www.ar15.com/content/guides/parts/

I would also suggest the book, "Build Your Own AR15" as it's available from most bookstores for under $15.

And all the good companies to buy parts or rifles from are listed above.

You might want to start with a kit that has a complete upper. \

I have used and highly reccomend J&T Distributing.(Click on add above for linkage). $469.95 for a carbine kit, $120 for a lower reciever and you're shootin' for $590.25.

I also used the stickies in the build forum to learn what all the little bits and piececs do and where they go.

For an inexpensive first build look to Blackthorne....www.akpartskits.com
I purchased 2 from them and built them up and have had no malfunctions. I polished some of the parts to remove some casting imperfections but I have shot at least a 1000 rounds through them and they have performed very well. The complete 16 inch carb kit is under 400.00 and I fitted them with DPMS lowers. I do recommend staying with the chrome lined barrels though.

5.any specific tips on what to watch for bad/good brands ect...
6. Last one i swear!!! best suppliers and websites to find what i need

1: this might help; advice: read the tacked threads
2: ???...refering to the mechanics of the AR or firearms in general? obey the 4 rules
3: depends on how in-dept you go for your build; if its going to be armory level, you will need at least: leatherman, hammer/mallet, AR armory wrentch (DPMS and Bushy are great for the price), moly grease, allen wrenches, punches, etc
4: in the long run, and if you intend on having a few ARs, "yes" building is cheaper overall
5: avoid Hesse/Vulcan/(perhaps Blackthrone if they are the same comp)
6: check the EE and Ind boards

i'd consider some of these blackthrone topics 1st:

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=335197

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=331196

if they really hesse/vulcan in another name, i'd avoid em...YMMV

and welcome to the site to both of yalls
