which handguard offers the lowest profile?  From looking at pictures, it looks like larue maybe to lowest.  I'm thinking of getting the troy one, but don't know how the profile is.  I used the knights one in the military an it's pretty comfortable and I have a utg one which is not comfortable at all.  It was to round.

the overall diameter of the rail. the pictures of the Larue ones I can see that the side and bottom rails are pushed closer towards the barrel

and forgot to mention. I'm looking for something like the Larue but in a two piece for a mid-length gas barrel

Gotcha.

Start by reading the "big bad handguard thread" or whatever it's called that is tacked at the top of this forum.  Lots of good info there, just be sure to watch the dates of posts.  It started 5 years ago.

ETA:  You added the part about being 2-piece while I was still typing.  That changes thigns and I'm sure I've seen any good info comparing differing systems.

so after lot's of researching I found that Larue and Daniel defense to have the slimest profile at about 2" wide.  Saw that DD has the 2 piece Omega rails in carbine length.  I contacted them about a midlength version and he said they should be available in mid and rifle lengths in about three weeks.

some info from my research:
Larue= approx. 2" wide also has bottom rail closer to barrel, but only in one piece
DD= aprrox. 2" wide with a more oval shape, available in two piece(omega)
Troy= approx. 2.2" wide, looks to be kinda oval too, also two piece
MI= approx. 2.4" wide, less oval shape, also two piece
Samson= ?, looks to be similar to Troy
YHM= ?
Surefire= ?

looks like it's going to be DD Omega mid-length for me

An excellent choice.
