I have been lurking a while and learning a lot. I have read a lot of the stickies about assembly. (Not really new to minor smithing, but will be my first AR build.) My parts are supposed to ship next week, so I am getting tooled up for my build.
My question is about the lower vice block, how necessary is it? How much work is done with the lower in that position vs in your lap, or flat on the bench? (Or cussing at it while your buddy tries to hold it steady) I'm sure it can be done without one, so no need to point that out. However if "most" of the assembly is done with it held nicely secure and vertical, I will probably look into picking one up. Thanks for your help and all the stuff I have already read that you guys have posted! |

You do not need a lower vice block to assemble a lower. The 2 biggest things are to tape the pliers when squeezing in the bolt catch pin as to not mar the lower. And the most important, is to support the ear of the lower when doing to trigger guard roll pin, or you WILL break the ear on your lower. Just follow this guide and you will be good to go. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/226782_Assemble_your_own_LOWER__UPPER__FREE_FLOAT__TRIGGER__GAS_BLOCK___Step_by_step_instructions_.html |

Assembling a lower with a vice and mag well block isn't necessary but it sure makes the process a heck of a lot easier. As for installing the trigger guard, I place a thin piece of wood underneath the wear to support it and it's worked out well for the lowers I've assembled so far. |

I just completed an AR-15 build and having considered myself not too mechanically inclined, I agree with the posters is that you do not need a vice block. Follow the advice here and you'll be GTG.
The advice of supporting the 80% lower with wood, especially trigger guard installation is important. I enjoyed putting it together which IMO, bonds you with your rifle. 80% lower installation |
