Anyone know the difference of the max effective range between a 16 inch and a hbar 20 inch barrel?
I'm getting ready to build an AR with a short barrel, will be mostly used for target shooting/plinking, but may occasionally be used for coyotes. Just wondering how effect it would be for that or what the effective range would be. Anyone.....Bueller? CB.... |

M16
* Maximum Range - 3,600 meters * Max Effective Range for a Point Target - 550 meters * Max Effective Range for an Area Target - 800 meters M4 * Maximum Range - 3,600 meters * Max Effective Range for a Point Target - 500 meters * Max Effective Range for an Area Target - 600 meters 16" Probably somewhere in between |
| I have read before that fmj bullets stop fragmenting reliably at ranges of 75 and 150 yds respectively for 16 and 20 inch barrels. (EDIT: note that just because it doesnt frag doesnt mean it doesnt hurt, my army bud says hes never had an issue with his m4 or m249 with his battle experience never exceeding 300 yds.) This information comes from an author who strongly poopoos the 223, but I do consider him knowledgeable. I know NOTHING about the hunting applications of 223 except that I wouldn't deer hunt with it. With 80 gr. bullets my friend who shoots NRA high power says he gets better consistency than his .308 friends, I believe him, hes a high master. I hope that with a grain of salt, this helps. |
