i am getting closer to ordering everything for my rra rifle. can anyone explain to me the advantages of having the mid-length handguards? also, i don't want rails at this time, but i have not seen after-market mid-length handguards that have rails. can anyone help me out? thanks!

The midlength gas system increases the sight radius, and some say that the longer gas tube increases reliability as well.  I also like the aesthetics.

As far as rail systems, there is the ARMS SIR #58, also midlength systems from Armalite, YHM, there is a middy FIRSH, and I believe RRA is about to release a middy too (probably a YHM).  There are probably more, but these spring to mind off hand.

There may be more after the SHOT show.

I really like the look of the mid-legnth. The barrel extending past the front sight does not look too long.

Daniel Defense also makes a Free Float railed forearm for the midlength system.
