Let me start by saying I'm a complete AR noob, so forgive my ignorance. We all started there.
Is there someone who makes a non gas tube style folding front sight that clamps on the barrel, that can be mounted near the muzzle? Is my only option to make or modify an exsiting design? I'm trying gain the benifits of a longer sight radius. |
| You will see it a lot in 3-gun and multi-gun, any of the clamp on or set screw types will work well. As for barrel harmonics, build the right load and you should do fine. Some of the best iron sight shooters in the country(Piatt,Miller,Johnson) all use them with great success. |

Agreed. What barrel length are you planning on? There are some fairly long FF tubes out there that can increase the existing sight radius with a mounted BUIS That said - I don't know if the point of diminishing returns on sight radius distance starts to appear. A quality front sight mount can be clamped on without harmonic problems... For example;
What starts messing up harmonics is when you clamp bipods or lights or heavy laz0rs etc.. to the barrel that attach at multiple points, or put excess or varying stress on the barrel. If it's repeatable, constant pressure at one clamp point, then it won't hurt anything. Here is the base used in the pic above. the .750" dia. version might work on an AR barrel. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=7918&title=BARREL%20BAND%20&%20SIGHT%20BASE I don't know if you'd be able to get a sight mounted high enough for an AR15 style rear sight though, and I doubt there are any folding sights for those types of bases, but one could surely be modified to take a picatinny style rail. ETA: you could also just use a spare picatinny railed gas block that is mounted via clamp or set screws. There would be a few extra holes in it, but it would work, and would probably be the cheapest method. |

I was thinking of a heavy profile 20" barrel, with some kind of milled gas block, and moving the front sight toward the muzzle. I'm new to all this, I was wondering why you don't see AR rifles configured like this. Because it's not exactly a great idea for an assault rifle. Fine for a competition only gun. A dissipator barrel has a similar sort of set up. A gas block under the handguards and another FSB/Gas block up front. All you need is a low profile or railed gas block at the normal location and then get a FSB, folding or standard, and mount it it further out. Just because it's a gas block doesn't mean it has to be used as such. |
| Champion Shooters Supply and Champions Choice are a couple of sources for the AR-15 front sight post you seek. Buy the cheapest one they offer and don't clamp it so damn tight that you restrict the muzzle. Sinclair International or OK Weber may be able to help you too. The Thompkins front sight (globe) is relatively inexpensive and large enogh. The bigger the globe the better, just stay away from the 30mm unless you have at least a 26" barrel. |
