How often will you be shooting in very low light?  If this is for a rifle mainly used for plinking, then it's my opinion that an illuminated reticle offers too much complication (stuff to break) than any benefit it would provide. And a 50mm objective is simply a bigger target for something to hit, IMHO; a good 40mm scope will provide a very bright and clear image.

If you're on a tight budget (and who ain't?), then you should go ahead and fork over the money for a scope from a maker known for producing GOOD scopes, and with optics, you really do get what you pay for, but there ARE some good scopes that aren't all that expensive.

Nikon, Bushnell (the "Elite" series), Weaver, Sightron, and some others (whose names I forget, right offhand) all make very good scopes, and aren't terribly expensive. The Nikon 3-9x40mm ProStaff scope retails for $150, and has typical Nikon optics...and Nikon didn't get a world-wide rep as a leader in optics by producing crap.

Anyway, you get the idea, I'm sure. Do yourself a favor, and shop around, and You'll be able to find a good scope from a good maker that will fit your needs AND your budget. PLEASE don't settle for a "bargain-basement" scope!
