I want to use a Elcan Specter DR 1x4 on a 14.5" 7.62 caliber rifle.

Which version is more compatible, the 5.56 or 7.62 version?

The 7.62 version is calibrated for a nato round out of a 20" barrel.

The 5.56 version is calibrated for a M855 out of a 16" barrel.

It also gets more complex as the 7.62 reticle is calibrated for use with 147 gr rounds.   While I shoot some of that, I  also use 168 mad 175 gr bullets from my 16" LWRC REPR.  I suggest you do what I did (I have both the 5.56 and 7.62 models).  Establish a 200 yd zero for both and then learn what the hold overs really give you independent of how the lines are labeled.
