i'm just gettin' started with all this ar15 stuff.  the most tactical gun i've got is a savage (hold your disgust for my selection of savage for a later date) with a choate stock and harris bipod.  so i need a lot of help in selecting accessories.  right now i'm looking at lights.  all i hear is surefire this and surefire that, but what about streamlight and TACM III?
is there THAT much of a difference?  i mean surefire is one expensive mofo.  any info i could get on models from different companies and pros and cons would be great.  thanks.

The main reason I would buy a SF is the shock isolated bezel. Hell, thats the only reason.....

Laser Devices Inc. is pushing the OP-6 light that has an isolated bezel, price is cheaper than SF, but not by much.

If you're not that concerned with the bulb being taken out by recoil or bumps, a good choice would be to mount a SF G2 nitrolon or 6P.

To reinterate: "Surefire this and Surefire that"

When it comes to AR dressing out the serious shooters tend to examine what works in the toughest environments and exclude the other items. Surefire light systems lead this catagory for illumination tools the same way KAC RAS's are prefered by most.

Since you're just getting in to this my best suggestion to you is to read these boards religiously and study everything under a microscope. Follow what accessories work and why individuals selected them over other items. For example if you're going with a folding rear sight on a flat top upper look at offerings such as the KAC 300 mtr and 600 mtr as opposed to the ARMS #40 fold down and the LMT fixed rear BUIS. I personally use the KAC 300 mtr. but have used all the others and each is a great product, it just turned out the 300 mtr did what I wanted the rear sight to do the best in my case.

This site is a great consumer report location.

Are you considering the light setup for the Savage or your future AR, or both?

SureFire gets discussed most because they're the leaders in weaponslight systems.  And their lights get high praise for their adaptability, they can be confired into other setups or their parts can be interchangeable with other lights.

yeah, the ar15.  i'm confused exactly which way to get setup.  can i just take a handheld light and buy a mount for it?  if so, is that the better way to go?  i get confused trying to figure out their website.  a better question for you guys would be.....how would you do it?  keep in mind the ole lady might get a little bit ugly if i get the most expensive one they've got.

Well yes you can go a simpler route.

If you have a rail system on your gun you can simply go to Wal Mart and pick up a set of inexpensive weaver 1" rings and mount a small hand held in that such as a 6P, 6Z, or the easier priced polymer framed Surefires. Surefire will tell you that these lights really aren't rated for weapon fire and they're right but a 6Z in a weaver ring, and later a KAC ring mount served me for quite some time on both an M4 carbine and an MP5 without incident. Right now that set up is on a Remington 870 12 gauge via a Surefire rail system until I get a dedicated rail mount light for it.

What your describing doing is kind of my backup light system for long guns until I put together the money and make the selection as to various other dedicated weapon light systems. After the 870 is complete the next place it will light is a pre ban AK47 on a Brugger and Thomet rail system.

Edited to add: There are also flashlight set ups that will fit onto the front sight tower of your AR as well. In case you're not using a rail system. I've a friend running one of these on a Colt 9mm smg and it works fine.
