I just bought my first ar today at the gunshow at tulsa expo center.  It is a DPMS 16" M4-A3.  I cleaned it up and put the first 100rds through it this afternoon.  it fired great for about the first 20 rds but then i had about 5 FTF's in a row.  i tapped the mag after each FTF to make sure it was seated.  the 6th time it half fed the round and the bolt hit the round in the side.  I finally just removed the mag because it was time to clean it again for barrel break-in.  after i cleaned it, i loaded up the other factory mag that came with it and it worked fine.  i continued to fire up until about 80 total rounds and then i called it a day.  im ended up using the mag that was in the gun when the FTF happened later in that shooting session and the gun fed fine.  the 2 mags i used were both the factory mags that came with the gun.  this is my first ar so i wasn't sure it i had a gun problem, a mag problem, or if this was just a teething problem.  thanks for all the help.

If you were using the same ammo in both mags and one feeds and one acts up you may just have to deburr the edges of the feed lips on the bad mag. if it still acts up then i would do this. On the mag that is failing to feed, with the mag installed in the mag well, take something like a piece of cardboard an push in the lower back between the mag and mag well. This will kick up the feed angle of the mag. Now try for FTF and if it now works find then i would just pry out the back of that mag on the spot welded fold with a small screwdriver were the mag hits just inside the bottom of the mag well. This is alot earier then messing with the mag feed lips.

so it sounds like this is just a mag problem more than a gun problem?  i reused the malfuntioning mag a few minutes later and it worked fine.

Break in problem, and best guess is that you didn't clean and lube the rifle correctly out the gate.  Go over to the maintenance forum and look at the tacked threads on cleaning and lubing the rifles. Also, it may not be a bad idea to break the mags down and give them a good scrubbing as well (you just don’t know where they may have been).
