ok, a friend of mine has a dpms upper with the titanium-nitrate coated complete bcg. he's asking $300. is this a good price? he said it's totally complete except barrel and "barrel parts". what exactly are barrel parts? i was looking at doing this as it's more affordable than buying the complete upper at once. what else will i need though? can i just order a barrel and that's it or are there more parts involved?

Barrel, flash suppressor, gas block, gas tube and pin and depending on your handguard setup:
Free float handguard that usually comes with proprietary barrel nut

Or

Barrel nut, delta ring pack, handguard and handguard end cap.

You will also need the tools to assemble it.

FWIW, you can get a new Colt M4 upper and BCG for about the same price. You can get another brand M4 upper for abot $100.

No, just the upper with forward assist and ejection port cover assembly. If you want a complete upper (with barrel) you are looking at about $400 and up. That is just a basic one with M4 profile barrel and standard handguards. Check Primary Arms, DSG Arms, Brownells, Midway USA, Spikes Tactical, Gunbroker, Smart Gunner and the EE. It is usually cheaper to get the complete rifle or complete upper rather than building it yourself with parts, but sometimes you can't find an upper or rifle configured exactly the way you want.

You will get more for your money buying a complete m4 upper from LMT, BCM or any other reputable manufacturer. DPMS is questionable in my experience, and may or may not look right on a standard mil-spec lower. By the time you buy a decent barrel and tools you are close to five bills anyway. I have gotten really good stuff out of Spikes so if cost is an issue start there. Your buddy isn't trying to take you for a ride or anything but it may start to add up fast.

Sounds a little high.  Look here for comparison http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/complete-uppers.html.

[edit] Quoted the wrong post, sorry. Those at PSA were minus BCG and charging handle, add $125 minumum for those.

I found a nitrate coated BCG, upper receiver and upper receiver with parts for 257.90 shipped. He's not trying to rip you off or anything, just trying to get what he paid for it back. If you are looking to stay low on the upper either buy one complete from some of the previously mentioned companies or piece together a inexpensive upper with a decent barrel. That's all you'll get from most places in that price range. In other words if you are looking in the $400-$500 complete upper you won't find a match grade barrel on it. Most likely MOA not sub-MOA. Spikes, Green Mountain, Del-ton amongst others are affordable and accurate (not sub-MOA) in the $125-$175 price range.
