I'm not a total newbie, but my experience with civilian models is very limited. So here is my question:

I have been in the market for an AR15. I saw a model SR-556 by Ruger that looks good, feels good, but seems a little pricey at $1600. Anybody know anything about this rifle? Anyone have one or know someone who has one that can share their opinion?

At first people were skeptical. But they have turned out to be a fine piston AR. If you are looking for a piston gun with that setup, they are great.
I am a DI gas system guy so I would stick with BCM, Colt, Bushy, DD, Stag.

They are still fairly new on the market. I like DI myself, not a big fan of pistons

For a built rifle I think they're pretty awesome. They've been getting good written reviews in publications but a few guys on the boards here have reported hammer pins walking. Depending on who you talk to it's debatable how big an issue this is. I have a built RRA DI gun and think a Ruger SR556 would be a perfect addition if I didn't think my wife would divorce me. Smart shopping would get you one for about $1500. If you go back about 3 or 4 pages on this board you'll pick up some threads on the Ruger SR556.

-Ruger has a track record of recalling their new guns for one failure or another.
-Proprietary upper/rail attachment.  Burrito-sized roll pins.  Why did they feel the need to do that?
-Why the 1/9 twist?

It's another 'me too' rifle, from the companies that say "hey, there's a lot of money to be made in this terrorist rifle stuff, lets throw our hat in the ring."
just my opinion.

the big diff is piston; still too new imo for good reports, but i would opt for one if the price was good
