Not an oddball question at all That shotgun is called a "Masterkey". Here is a pic:

Knight's Armament (KAC) makes the original if I'm not mistaken, although there are plans floating around the web to assemble your own. I have no idea about the specific legal requirements to own one, since it is an NFA item. I don't know if it can be registered simply as an AOW, or if you would have to pay the full $200 tax stamp for a short barreled shotgun. Hopefully one of the gurus here can give you more detailed information.

Here's what you need to know:

- $1899 + tax
- $200 for the tax stamp
- NFA item
- Totally impractical

This is an idea that comes up every couple of years in the military as new people come in, and every time they try it, they quickly find that carrying all the extra weight of a shotgun on your rifle all the time just for the occasional door breeching is not the way to go.  Plus, due to the extremely short barrel, the shotgun is worthless as an antipersonel weapon at more than 5 yards, and it's difficult to fire anyway due to the fact that you have to hold the rifle by the mag well.  In every case, the military has ditched these and gone back to carrying separate pistol-grip shotguns for breeching.

Anybody know what happened to the funky new underslung shotgun they were trying out? IIRC it was made by colt and used a 5 round mag.

Thanks....but for 2200 + tax, I'll just carry my Maverick 88 on my back with a pistol grip
