are new oils like m-pro7, slip2000, weapon shield truely better than the "old timer" oils like hoppes lubricating oil, rem oil, and ballistol. is it just marketing? the overall question is how much better are the new products than the old?

I use wheel bearing grease... $5 for a 1lb jar lasts forever.

SHORT ANSWER YES.

hoppes lube oil is just mineral oil (baby oil).

Newer oils have add packs for wear, rust prevent, etc.

the oils of today can be worlds better than oils of just 10 years ago.

Define "Better"

Better lube?

Better at corrosion resistance?

I wondered the same thing but since I place zero value in opinion based web comments I took it upon myself to do a quntitative evaluation of  36 gun lubes and 46 products in all.

Look it over to see if your version of "better" is satisfied.

Really? Viscosity aside (and at the levels we ought be using oils its a non-issue.)

But no, seriously Something quantitative please aside from the ole two finger oil "feelings" thing you just manufactured.

Put chlorine between your fingers and rub it. Slick stuff but not something to be used as a lube.

Sorry, but that test isn't all that meaningful for more than rust prevention. It doesn't measure lubrication in the long t erm, when it's hot, when it's cold, when it's dirty, or anything even resembling extreme pressure where an EP additive would come into play. For a bolt, slide, or lever action it might have merit. For a semi auto that gets warm, not so much.

It is better than the one where a guy just put a trigger gauge on a slab of steel and pulled it across another steel survace.

If your looking for an in-depth side by side comparison of breakdowns/wear/etc over the course of years/thousands of rounds, I doubt you'll find one that will satisfy. If you think about it, using Mobil 1 makes sense to me. It is used to lubricate pistons (and cams, etc) and I imagine that pistons generate more heat/friction than a bcg and Mobil 1 is rated to 10k miles (at least that is the interval on the Mercedes engines I work on). I started using it as soon as I heard it mentioned. Just my 2 cents.

Here's a pretty good evaluation of common gun lubricants
Unlike most tests, this one also tests actual lubrication ability, not just how well a lube protects against rust.

Most modern synthetic lubricants are all around better than the older natural lubricants.

That's the same one DIY_guy posted earlier... the guy who actually did that test.. or at least someone who uses the same screen name.
It doesn't really test lubrication for more than a few passes.

Yes that was me and I did two diff coefficient of friction evaluations (static and dynamic) The dynamic friction evaluation ran for 3 minutes for each product.

Old saying, if it slides, grease it, if it turns, oil it.
I use Mobil One and Tractor Supply high temperature grease on my Garand, 1911, and ARs. Never have rust or undue wear.
