Excuse me for this silly question but.... I have a Colt Match Target HBAR 20 in. Bbl. bought new in 1999. If I change the barrel to a 16" and add a collapsable stock will this be legal? I live in Michigan. |
| The short answer: NO. The somewhat longer answer, if you bought it new in 1999, it is considered a post-ban weapon, and thus NO. However, if you bought a pre-ban in 1999, then yes. Check the serial number of your Colt on the sticky on the top of this page to see if it is a pre-ban. |

I live in Michigan. The ONLY way this would be legal with current laws, being that it is a post-ban, is to take off the pistol grip. Firing an AR15 with a collapsible stock and no pistol grip would not be my idea of a good time. You could add a thumb hanger, but a sharp stick in the eye would probably be more comfortable. And that's just federal law. I have no idea about your state laws. |
| Let me get this right... I can legally buy an AR with a 16" Bbl. and a collapsalbe stock at my local gun store/gun show because it was manufactured "Pre-ban" but if I modify my "Post - ban" 20" AR with a 16" bbl and collapsible it's illegal???? Is'nt it phycically the same gun???? Must be that rediculous "Shady -Brady Bill" HUH? |
| You can add a 16" barrel, and you can add a Post-Ban Fixed collapsible stock. According to the ATF the stock must be fixed in one position, it does not matter what position as long as it can not be moved. I have a M4 16" with a 4 position stock FIXEd in the second hole for comfort. It doesnt take much to change the position, but still requires tools to disassemble the stock and change that position. As long as th stock can not be adjusted on the fly, you should be fine. A 16" post-ban even with a collapsible stock fully collapsed still is longer then the 26" requirment. |
