I like wolf for plinking but im now interested in shooting more accuratley with my 3x9 scope. What is considerably more accurate than wolf but not too much harder in the wallet? This is all coming out of a bushmaster xm15 e2s 20". With wolf im getting 3-5" groups at 100 yards.

No disrespect, but if you have a scoped AR with a 20" barrel and you are getting 5" groups, the problem is probably not the ammunition.  I think the only changes you would see with more expensive ammunition is a smaller bank account.

No.  Wolf is plinking ammo ONLY.  Its just some cheap stuff that will go bang.  Wolf is not consistent.  Meaning that if were to chrono Wolf ammo in .223 you get such varying velocities that you can in no way get ANY decent groupings.  My bushy has NEVER seen Wolf.  My Saigia on the other hands eats nothing but Wolf.  If youre seeking true accuracy and I am guessing you are being that youre shooting a scope AR spend the money on good ammo.  Sometimes ya do get what ya pay for.

Buy a couple boxes of Q3131a, or spring for Black Hills. Say, 100 rounds. Go shooting at see what your groups are. If there still 3-5", you know it isnt the ammo. If your groups drop to, say, 1-2", you know its the ammo.

Not to dog you but I can shoot 5'' groups with wolf at 100 yards with irons. Prone of course.

ok ok, i know im probably not actually "outshooting" the wolf, but I still need to get my hands on something more consistent to get any better.

This thread brings up a good point; why has no one chrono'd and measured Wolf ammo?   I personally love the stuff for plinking, and it hits what I aim it at.  I'd love to get some hard numbers to verify if indeed wolf is inconsistant, or if that's just bunk like all the BS kaboom stories that can never be verified.

I know, I know... I should do it myself.  I would, but I don't have any calipers or scales, much less a chronograph.  One of you reloader guru's help a brother out!

Try black hills ammo; it's more money, but if you're shooting for groups you aren't going to be shooting all that much.  The blue box (remanufactured IIRC) is supposed to be outstandingly consistent.

Wolf does great out of my 16'' at 50 yards. 1 ragged hole at 50 yards. But they start to spread out at 100 yards. I'm pretty sure its just me. Wolf isn't that bad. I wouldn't want to use it for self defense or anything but for plinking its fine.

More than likely it is the 8lb. trigger.

My junker AR shoots much tighter than 5".  Off hand at 100 I can get tight head shots with the irons.  Maybe your scope or barrel is loose?  Or the nut is loose....... the nut behind the butt!

Gotta qualify this a touch.  I also shoot the wolf from my match rifle.  Leupold, lapped barrel, etc.  (people will wet the bed over this)  Velocity drift won't affect significantly affect windage at a range with side berms and 100 yards..  It won't have a significant effect on elevation at 100 yards, either, unless your chamber has a fricking leak....

I get 2.0" to 1.5" groups with Wolf 62 grain FMJ from my 16" Bushmaster Car-15 H-Bar.  If you want tighter groups than that without a huge cut into your wallet try Seller Belliot 62 grain SS-109.  About a few months ago I found some for about $4.75 a box somewhere, I don't know where exactly.  The problem you're going to face is the real apreciaple groups gain is always in Black Hills stuff with a Black Hills price.  My $0.02 worth.

picked up some black hills remanufactured today, only $21 for a box 50. I think thats a pretty fair price compared to the $1+ per round of federal or something like that. Ill let you all know how it works out next time go shooting

Which one?  You seem to know of several, perhaps you could point out just one of the myriad that I can't seem to find?

OK.  Here are some numbers.  These are a dupe of results in an earlier post.  IIRC, I ran these several months ago through two uppers.

Colt A1 upper, 20" 1:12:  Wolf poly 55 gr FMJ  Lot # P20404 ran:  2847, 2875, 2815, 2902, 2879 for avg. 2863 fps.
Same platform:  SA M193 Lot # 630A83 ran 3363, 3287, 3292, 3282, 3271 for avg. 3299 fps.

Colt A1 11.5" 1:7:  Wolf (same stuff) ran:  2511, 2525, 2479, 2530, 2539 for avg 2517 fps.
Same platform:  SA M193 (same lot as above)  ran 2968, 2887, 2957, 2885, 2863 for avg. 2912 fps.

Yes, the SA ran faster in the 11.5 than the Wolf in a 20".  Big deal.

Note that the Wolf was pretty damned consistent.  Note that the SA is less consistent and really, really fast.  The SA is getting old, I guess.  I have less anxiety shooting Wolf through my 16s vs. the SA.  Will probably relegate the SA for AR and K2 blasting.

HTH,

Sam

Jeeez, what a rip,  I can load  (100)  52gr Hornady HP for that kind of money, or less. Same for the 55gr  premium bullets.

I think it depends on the rifle. Most Wolf I have shot was so bad I don't even waste my time doing groups. I just use it for plinking where good ammo would be wasted.

Then one day I tried it in a new rifle and it actually grouped at -2" at 50 yards!!!  Wow. That was the best Wolf grouping I had ever seen with my own eyes.

You guys doing that at 100yrds  should post what kind of barrels you are using.  All mine are 1:7" and just one did well with Wolf. The rest spladder it all over the place.

Try some of the Winchester White box 45gr JHPs. They have been reported to be VERY accurate. $9/40, which comes out to ~ $0.22/round
