First of all, and most importantly.

Is your paper going to be Pro-Gun or Anti-Gun?

This rifle can defend my home and country, and with just a few parts changed, I can shoot 6.8 ammo, which is basically a .270. So, it can be a deer rifle too. It can also shoot about 50 or so different other calibers from .22 LR to .50, by just switching this top section, and putting in the right magazine. So, it can be used for hunting about anything, not just for fighting. Also, it is really accurate. Most all the ARs made today shoot better than 1" groups. I just can't get those capabilities anywhere else.

The AR-15 series of weapons has represented the U.S. and it's defense of freedom around the world for half a century. It has become more than a weapon, it has become a symbol of the stand against tyranny and oppression for people of many countries.

Here in the U.S., the AR-15 has been used as a method of defending our homes, as a sporting arm for hunting, competition, and as a tool for law enforcement.
Unfortunately it has also been attacked as an "evil" weapon capable of being used as a weapon of terror, even though handguns have been used by violent criminals 100s of 1000s of times more often as their weapon of choice. The AR-15 has been under attack from those who would limit our right to defend ourselves, as outlined in the 2nd Amendment, for over 2 decades. However, support from the people, and those in government has kept this valuable resource available to the citizens of our country.

The AR-15 continues to develop and evolve, and with these evolutions, has remained a viable form of protection for our military, law enforcement, and citizens, longer than any other weapon made for that purpose. It is available in so may calibers and configurations, that it is usable for nearly any purpose one might conceive for a firearm.

I would start looking at crime stats before, during and after the AWB. See if you can find stats on crimes committed by items banned under the AWB during these times. Look on the FBI or justice department's web sites.

A word of note on the term "Assult Weapon" an assult weapon is defined under federal law as a weapon capable of fully automatic fire. These weapons are already controlled under the National Firearms Act of 1934. The "Assult Weapons Ban" in this case was named so for dramatic effect and to demonize these weapons. It actually was a ban and restriction on semi-automatic weapons that resemble or had similar features to an assult weapon but are not assult weapons as thye are legally defined.

I'll give you the clif note version. Gun restrictions do not prevent gun violance (big shocker to everyone here). Further AWB restricted items like magazines over 10 rounds, well your average street thug that commits most of the crimes in the grand scheme of things only need one or two rounds to commit the majority of crimes. Other restricted items were things like bayonet lugs on rifles. When the F&^# has anyone commited a crime with a bayonet charge. Or collapsable stocks - my SBR with it's collapable stock is still pretty big and hardly easily to conceal. They just make them more comfortable to shoot when wearing armor. The ban mostly drove up prices on these items but how many criminals buy these legally. I bought my first AR15 during the AWB, I bought a couple of 30 round mags for it and put a collapable stock on it. All items bought from major retail dealers. They just could not see the gun with these items installed or included.

One item of note to look at involving a crime using "assult style weapons" is the LA Bank robery and shootout with LAPD. This occured in Feb. 1997 - DURING the AWB in one of the most restrictive states for firearms. So how could this crime be commited using the evil guns - they are illegal right??? Well lets see - convicted criminals (consp. to commit robery) obtained these guns - I'm unaware how - illegal under state and federal law if crime was a felony. They illegally modified them into full auto weapons - againt the NFA of 1934 not the AWB. Liberal media talkes about how they carried "armor piercing ammo" in these terrible "assult weapons" well they don't mention that almost all rifle rounds will defeat soft armor that police patrol officers noramlly wear so they could have carried a lever action 30-30 and still penetrated the police armor and still had enough stand off range to keep the cops far outside the effective range of their handguns. The bad guys armor would defete the cops pistol and shot gun rounds even if they could get close enough. This is a good example of the fact that the AWB nor any other law (NFA, Ca. laws, ect) did not effect or stop one of the worst police shootouts in receint history.

Good luck with your paper. Sounds like your weekend will suck doing research.

look up the Dept. of Justice (DOJ) findings on the AWB..I'll see if I can find it..stand-by
ETA link––

DOJ report
summary says basically that the effects of the ban were negligable, and almost too small to measure reliably.

a little off subject, but that just shows if they want it bad enough to commit a crime they are going to get it...... i mean really they wanted to rob a bank, do they really think banning something is going to stop them, no way

little it back on topic if you look it up the % of crimes commited with "Evil Weapons" is some where around 4% or less ...... so the AWB didn't really change anything, it was more of a politcal deal of getting weapons the concider evil off the streets, and one more step toward getting rid of more guns....... you can look up current bills in the works too, as every year they try to pass a new AWB, just like the 94 one, although they try to make it a little stricter now
