Sorry for the dumbass question, and sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section!

I have a 14.5" upper/bbl assembly that was given to me.  Rather junky but functional post-ban Bushmaster HBAR stuff.  It has an AK-74 style muzzle brake.  Thing is, I don't know if it's permanently attached or not.  I can't get it to move, but I see no pinning or obvious weld.  I'm guessing it's permanently attached in some way I'm not familiar with.

Just trying to stay legal, any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

Could be locktite'd on. Which is not necessarily permanent but could feel perm..

I had a BM exactly like that years ago. IIRC there was a little "splotch"in the finish at 6 o'clock where it had been pinned. If you don't see any weld marks, it may have been silver-soldered on. Somewhere on ARFCOM there is a guide for splitting a perm-attached muzzle device off the barrel. I believe they use a Dremel and a cold chisel.

Keep in mind the minute you remove the muzzle device, that you now have an SBR barrel. Make sure you permanently install a new muzzle device (that will bring the barrel length to at least 16") as soon as you remove the old one.

I was already thinking Dremel and cutoff wheel, though I probably won't remove it.  Just wanted to try and make sure I wasn't already in SBR territory!  I think you're right about the silver solder.

Thanks for the info!

You could try posting in the ADCO forum about this and see what they think.

You may have left hand theads.
I think I see a backwards crush washer, won't hurt anything, but if so, would make me be a little more suspicious of the install.

Is it a backwards crush washer, or a peel washer?

Sorry, but how do I tell the difference?

the old bushy did an awsome job on mine, you have to look at an angle to see the glare difference to find the spot. had one done at adco too, ok but not as smooth, but not to where i would send it back

Looks like a peel washer, then.

Also, I had no idea some AR barrels have LH threads...

Hehehe....
It's because you have that communist muzzle device, that you may have LH threads.

The free world (AR's) uses RH thread.

Actually, I take that back.  Could be either.

ETA:  It sure doesn't look like a backwards crush washer, but I don't see any laminates.

In the pic it looks cupped like a crush.
If it's a peel you might see the layers.

I can't get it to turn either direction.

You likely won't. If it's pinned and you turn it, then the threads get destroyed on the muzzle. If you want to remove it, use the Dremel & chisel method.
