Could you guys post some pics of your AR if you have a VTAC handguard? Also, could you give a brief personal review...how do you like it? its function? etc.?

Pics dont do them justice. They look alot better in person and are comfortable. I dont own one but i have handled a M&P 15 VTAC model at my local gun shop.

None of these are mine. If one of these is your photo, and you don't want it here, let me know and I will remove it.

Here's my old Noveske VTAC upper that I had to sell. I have to say I was a huge fan of the handguards.

I am also interested in knowing what everyone thinks of their VTACs! I am actually getting ready to order a set myself, I have looked at every type of handguard out there and have decided that I just really like these. Thank you everyone in advance.

Dont have pictures, but I am very happy with my VTAC hanguard.  Some may argue that they are a little dated, but it all comes down to preference.  Quality, finish, and functionality are all top notch in my opinion.

I used to run Vtac, but have switched to the new troy's  becuase of cost and addition top rail and smaller tube, the new Vtacs are probably where you want to put your money

I don't have pics of mine on the computer right now, but I have the M&P VTAC and it's a great rifle.  The handguards are really nice if you don't need to put a bunch of rail accessories on your gun.  I run mine with a fixed front on a two-inch rail and a VTAC light mount.  They're light and handle really well.  I haven't personally tried the new Troy handguards, but of all the smooth tube free-float fore-ends that I have handled––DPMS, PRI, and others––I prefer the VTAC.

I've got a VTac on my DPMS LR-308 (16" heavy) and i like it.  All i've mounted to it is a side sling mount, a short light rail and a bipod swivel.  I may get a pic up tonight.  I will say that it is not as solid as some FF tubes i've played with, since it slips on and is held in place with 6 small radial screws.  Could just be that the slip tolerance on mine is a little loose.  it's certainly rigid enough for a front sight or bipod with no problems though.  Between that and my UBR, it's decently heavy, but not rediculous to carry/shoot offhand.

I like them.  Love being able to put rails where you need them.  The loctite thing is a non-issue for me, so there aren't really any downsides that I can think of.

My rifle with a VTAC tube is one pictured above in the group of pics.  I have to say it is the best fore end on any of my rifles.  I have added a couple small rails for a front sight and light.

Here is my rifle length on a 16".  Have a few more like it waiting for new builds and a mid-length one waiting on a tax stamp for a 10.5" SBR build.  Comfortable, reasonably lightweight, and affordable.  The only potential concern that I've read about is whether the small screws that hold it in place would stand up to rough handling with a lot of gear on the tube.  I kept this build simple so I can't really speak to that issue though.

I partially wrapped the VTac because i like the texture better.  The buckle is a sling mount.
The overall color matches better in person, weird flash/lighting.

Yes, the VTac is supposed to be offset with the .308 so it can have the same diameter as the AR-15 VTac

Another reason why i wrapped a section...

it WILL get warm after 3 mags of rapid fire on the 308, but it cools off quickly.  I've never gotten it uncomfortably hot.  I can imagine a few beta dumps on an AR/M16 would get a little toasty though, if you're gonna do that get some shielded handguards, you don't need a freefloat tube...   Or get a forward grip.  But as i said, it does cool down pretty quick with all the surface area, including the barrel nut ventilation.

The newer VTacs are what you see on most of the rifles above.  They have a completely enclused gas tube passage and the 2piece barrel nut.  The older ones had a short section of exposed gas tube with the single peice barrel nut, leading to a lot of annoying finger burns...
Someone correct me if i'm wrong?

They have that new Troy? model with the integral top rail.

It looks pretty nifty, but I'm going to keep the JP type until I see a real NEED to change.

I dont care for the looks of the new Vtac extreme, yes it make be strong and works well for what it is
but so does many other handguards that look better.
I think that handguard on a AR looks like a badass wearing a leather jacket with pinstriped pants.

Its only locktite,  not like your silver soldering it on.  Well worth the end product IMO.     Seems to be about the best FFT on the market right now.

[#40]
how much loctite did you use?
12/3/2009 9:26:54 AM EDT
[#41]
Bryan, I used about 4-5 drops of blue locktite and let it set up for about 3-4 hours. Held the adapter nut very well while torqueing the barrel nut.  I thought I'd have major problems removing when it came time to replace the upper.  But the adapter has a large hole in it that will allow the use of a bar to remove.  The blue locktite is gooey.  I've also installed this handguard without any locktite at all.

Shame it won't work with a piston.

Was going to use it for a precision rig but I'm running a piston on it for suppressor use and for the ability to turn it off.
But the piston won't fit under it.
Best looking tube for a precision rig IMO, heard nothing but good for the feel of it too.

The V-tac can be installed without thread locking compound, worst case scenario the gas tube will keep it from spinning all the way around.

If I want to use a midlength VTAC tube on a barrel with a carbine-length gas system, could I use a Magpul MBUS for my front sight, or is the plastic MBUS going to be too close to the gas block and at risk for melting that way?

I have to agree, I like the JP\VTAC much better then the Troy\VTAC even if the Troy version is a little more cost effective.
