I just installed an Ares Defense piston kit and am having problems with the piston actually coming out of the spiggot when firing and getting jammed against the edge of the spiggot. This originally happened after the 2nd test fire, the first round of 3 after firing a successful single round in a magazine. Out of 50 rounds this continued to happen approx. every 10 to 15 rounds fired, after which i would just use the tip of a round to push the piston back in line with the spiggot, re-inserting it correctly. After this I removed the upper hand guard and upon inspection found that the roll pin for the gas block had been broken inside the block allowing for play of the gas tube/spiggot. Assuming this was the culprit, i replaced the roll pin and hand guard and test fired again. The roll pin has remained intact, the gas tube and spiggot tight, and the piston now ejects from the spiggot every few rounds. I have a stock milspec front sight aperture and gas block. I have heard of the roll pin breakage problem but until now never the piston problem. Could there be too much gas flow for some reason? Perhaps need a heavier buffer/spring? Anyon anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

I have two piston kits, Ares and Osprey 416.

As I installed Ares, I found the roll pin was inferior to the role pin (actually solid pin) provided by Osprey. I believe Osprey really knows the potential problem of piston kits. Since Osprey provided an extra roll pin, I then used that one on Ares. I did not have any problem using Osprey roll pin.

Have you modified or changed your buffer spring.  Is the op rod spring working?  It almost sounds as if your system is set too far apart, gas block to carrier.  Maybe see about adjusting the gas block or going to a different (heavier) buffer tube.  I have an Ares but not on gun yet.

Sounds like too much movement of the piston. Did you install the bushing correctly? And use the bolt supplied by Ares?

I have run over 500 rounds thru my Ares system so far and not one problem.

yeah my best idea thus far has been a different buffer. everything is installed correctly to my knowledge and i have the stock buffer and spring in my rifle. I have a few experiments in mind yet.

Yes the bushing is installed flush, and the bolt carrier is the one provided by Ares, with the gas rings removed as necessary. I have a buddy who has one too that has not given him any problems. I have a few experiments in mind yet to locate the problem. Thanks for your input, I haven't yet heard of an incident like this wiht the Ares kit.
