Components: CMT flat-top upper, CMMG 14.5" lightweight barrel, CavArms C-4 handguard. To get the barrel nut to index at the proper torque, my gunsmith had to nip off a barrel nut tooth. When I got the upper home and tried to put on the handguard, it was very difficult to get it in place, as the front of the handguard rests in the proper vertical position in the cap, but the rear has to be slightly twisted to get the rear locater nubs in the handguard to engage the teeth in the barrel nut (looking down at the last vent hole, the gas tube is visibly off to one side) and the handguard now bulges a bit at the center seams (already a problem typical of Cav handguards).

If I file one side of the rear locater nubs in the handguard ring so that the rear is also at the vertical position, will the handguard be able to twist to the other side? How else can I fix this problem?

Your “gun smith” f'd up. Get your barrel removed and reinstalled correctly, by someone familiar with AR15s.

Get your money back! He may be a "gun smith" but he doesn't know shit about AR's.

Go to the hometown forums. Maybe there's someone in your area who can help you out.
