I'm planning a build along this idea too.
Here's what I'm thinking so far: Nodak slickside lower Nodak top charging upper Young Manufacturing no forward assist chrome BCG: http://www.youngmanufacturing.net/product-info.php?pid123.html (You can specify sans YM rollmark too) Prototype AR-10 FSB Repro duckbill flashhider No trapdoor A1 stock (i'm not worried about early/correct on this) A1 pistol grip Standard LPK*(i really don't know where to start to simulate early, ie 601) flat slip ring (is there an early variant?) LW, ie. .625 at FSB, 16 in mid length chrome lined barrel (preferably 1 in 7 or 1 in 9) Was going to have the furniture painted to simulate the original handguards. Prototype FSB will not actually direct gas; plan is to run a dissipator setup with a ground down standard fsb. Finding a candidate barrel and not paying $$$ will be the fun part. I really don't want to have to buy some special magic hammer forged barrel and have it turned down, reparked, repinned, etc. Who's making repro duckbills nowadays? Also, anyone have a list of the parts I would need to mod on the LPK to get some semblance of accuracy? |

I can't find one, and have been looking for some time since I saw the reference when they were discussing the transitional period of the .222 Remington, and experimenting with different barrel lengths, bullets, powders, and so forth, to achieve the steel helmet penetration at 500yds. They did use a Remington Model 722 with a 22" barrel to demonstrate that the .222 Rem could penetrate a helmet at that distance, but chamber pressures were too high. This led to the development of what became the .223 Remington. The reference I'm looking for might also be for the AR10 with an experimental 22" barrel, so don't quote me. There were several different barrel/chamber/material experiments going on with the AR family for sure, to include fluting, unorthodox alloys, etc. |

After shooting a friends flat-topped 24 inch Varmint AR15 last weekend, I've been daydreaming a little about a 24" 'M16 prototype marksman/sniper rifle' (but lack of resources at the moment make it nothing more than a daydream) |
| Those were the pictures I was looking at, but I couldn't tell if that top one had a 20" or 22"...21"? I'm fairly cognizant of a reference to one with a longer barrel and maybe even a longer handguard/gas system. It would be cool to do a 22" in .222 Rem, with a bunch of hidden trick features, and go win a high-power match with it. Look at the top barrel in that pic of Knight's collection. |
