I'm pretty new to the world of AR's.

Recently, a couple of bud's and I were shooting my 20" bushmaster at dusk.  We finished a box of Winchester and remarked on the flash, pretty cool looking dull orange fireball the size of a softball (my bbl is plain, no brakes or anything).  Next we happed to load up some IMG.  Whoa, talk about a fire breating dragon!!  2-3 ft long bright white flame!

So I became curious about the flashes, but my web surfing has yielded me nothing.

My questions:
If this is covered somewhere, could someone post a link.
In your experience, which ammo has the most flash.
Which has the least.

I'm only asking those without brakes, suppressors, etc to keep it comparable.

First off, let me say I have a 16" post-ban Bushy.  Bald muzzle, no comps or FS.  I have tried various types of ammo from S&B, Winchester, SA, LC, and UMC.

BEST:  South African M1A3 & M1A4 (300rnd battle-pack stuff)
Flash was approx 3"-5"

WORST FLASH:  Lake City M193 from 1972
Flash was approx 12"-16"

Supposedly this Lake City has a flash retardant in the powder.  The flash from my rifle was about the size of a basketball, so without the flash-retardant, this stuff must be able to scorch a prairiedog from about a 100yds!  The flash was so bad, that when I brought my little sister(she was 18 and new to guns) out to shoot, I had a few LC's in the mag with SA's.  After about 10 or 15 rounds one of the LC's came up, and she proceeded to tell me "I SAW FIRE!!!!!!!" and informed me she would not be shooting my AR anymore.

Let me admit that a 16" barrel has a LOT more flash than a 20", so it may not be that bad in all rifles. This stuff was 20yrs old too.

Most M193 actually does NOT have flash retardant.

In my experience, South African has less flash than any other 5.56 out there.

Of course, that's entirely subjective [:)]

S and B is bad. A golf ball in the device, and lines of flame traveling out of it. A foot long flash out of my phantom equipped 16 inch gun.
