Does it affect visibility?  I'm thinking of getting one but am concerned about it acting like a pair of shades.

love mine, would never leave the optic without one on.  no effect on visibility

I find it to darken your FOV.

Yes it does.  It is a screen mounted on a non magnified optic.  You will see the screen in your FOV.  That said, it does not block the FOV and you can get to the point that you do not notice it but it does not vanish like one does on a magnified optic.
If your plans do not include people shooting back at you then you will have a clearer sight picture without one.  If you like cool jeewhiz gear you will have a trade off.

It blocks my view a bit...it's distracting...

Worst part, is that when I drop down to use my lower 1/3 backup irons (MBUS), the killflash totaly obscures the picture. All those little "lines" on the killflash and the small peep-sight and the forward "pin" all meld together and become a mess.

It made a HUGE difference when I took mine off the M4s.  It darkens, no question
