| If something has been Cerakoted, can it be re-coated a different color? Would it need to be stripped first? |
|
The manufacturer doesn't recommend coating over a completely cured finish as it tends to not adhere as completely as it would to a freshly properly prepared surface. When we do multiple colors, we do a flash between colors/coats to allow handling/masking, but will still allow for max protection.

Cerakote over Cerakote over Cerakote over Cerakote... http://area7precision.us/images/esee1.jpg What are you coating? A stripped lower |
| It would be best to at least lightly blast it. To remove all the Cerakote would mean removing the anodizing assuming it's anodized underneath. You need to be careful not to go to far or you could run into issues with out of spec pin holes. What color is it and what color do you want it to be? |

I was thinking of picking up one of the Gen2 Noveske lowers, but the only ones left on the market come pre-cerakoted black. |

I planned to cerakote at least one of the lowers a different color (foliage, as in Johnny rifle), and was concerned about whether I'd be able to do it if it was already cerakoted. |

120 grit aluminum oxide will take it off. That's what they recommend. Yes you can Cerakote over cerakote. But usually it's after only a 15 min flash time between. If it's been fully cured out Cerakote over Cerakote isn't going to bond that well. I'm not certified but I use a ton on everything from gun parts to engine cams.
(Just realized I am repeating what GCS said) |
