I was just checking out the CTD catalog and they have two different cases of 55gr Wolf, one reads "boxer primed" and the other is "berdan primed" what's the difference? is one better than the other? |

No noticable difference unless you reload, but Wolf is steel case anyways so again, no difference. Boxer primed uses one flash hole on the primer, Berdan uses I think 3 smaller flash holes. Supposedly Berdan allows for a more uniform powder ignition. So, if you have a VERY high end target rifle and are rolling your own you might see a difference between Boxer and Berdan. But, with Wolf ammo being a "bottom shelf" grade ammo i dont think it'll make a bit of difference in shooting. As for reloading, boxer is easier because theres only 1 flash hole. With Berdan theres more then 1 which makes popping the primer out a pain in the ass. There are tools to do it however, but in the event you absolutely must reload Berdan primed and dont have the proper tools you can use hydraulic methods. Fill the case with water, then seat a bullet. The pressure should force the primer out, but naturally makes something of a mess. An instance of "must reload" Berdan primed is with GP11 (7.5Swiss). The Swiss ammo is Berdan primed, however finding brass is a pain in the ass so it behooves one to save your brass and deal with the issues of Berdan primed brass. |
