I was wondering what the best way to clean this out would be? I know it might be hard to see because the picture quality isn't that good. The area I'm talking about seems to be out of reach. I'm beginning to get a crud buildup around where the barrel joins. Brushes can't seem to get it. Advice?

use a USGI chamber brush. that's what it's designed for.

The bristles won't make contact around that ring. I can get everything spotless except for that small area.

I've actually attempted the q tip approach. There wasn't enough room between the walls and the barrel for it to get down in there and clean. I also tried blowing it out with clp aerosol. It doesn't seem to produce enough force.

Don’t know what to tell you, that’s been my technique for years. Works fine for me.

I always dip a q-tip in the OMS/CLP mixture my bolt and carrier are soaking in.

I use dental tools that you can pick up at any flea market. You can pick up a assortment to meet any cleaning task you may have. Just be careful on how hard you press and pull when you do use them. They will scratch some surfaces, but I have yet to damage any of my weapons.
