Here is a reply from an archived post.
From:
TECHNICAL MANUAL
ARMY NO. 9-1005-319-23&P
AIR FORCE TO 11W3-5-5-42

RIFLE: 11 3/4 Inches (29 85 cm)
minimum to 13 1./2 inches (34 29 cm)
maximum

CARBINE: 10 1/16 inches (25.56 cm)
minimum to 11 1/4 inches (28.58 cm)
maximum.

here is what I have found.
Rifle springs have 41 to 43 coils   new springs are 12.75" in length
carbine springs  are 37 to 39 coils 10.5" in length new
Buffers for the rifle are only one length and type. 6" in length
Also unless you are doing max loads or long range you don't need extra power buffer springs. which can cause short-stroking and FTE problems
Pick up a copy of gunsmithing the AR-15 by Patrick Sweeney it is great and full of useful info. I originally forgot I had it till my fun with changing the A@ stock to a tactical stock. It is under the AA .50 Beowulf buffer tube thread.

You want an Armalite 308 buffer spring and Armalite 308 rifle buffer.

Alternatively you can substitute a DPMS 308 rifle buffer and DPMS 308 rifle buffer spring. DPMS has two different 308 springs, so you have to get the one designed for rifle stocks. Armalite uses the same 308 spring in both eifle stocks and carbine stocks.
