what are the rules for a home made compensator/flash suppressor ?  can i make an "anti-brake" on a lathe that is a hollow cylinder with a solid back wall and 9 cuts at the distal end(9,12, 3 O clock) at a 45 degree angle(forward) to be an anti-brake. the over all length would be about 5-6 inches and diameter would be about 1.5-2 inches. do i need to worry about class 2 scilencer issues (since my idea is to only need in the ear ear plugs instead of in ear AND over the ear tye). the over all idea would be to keep the muzzle blast directed at the soda cans*(they ARE EVIL, SODA MAKES YOU FAT)*.  no real attempts to actually contain teh blast just redirect it, am i getting onto thin ice with the ATF or is this a new idea.

As long as it doesn't reduce the sound signature, you should be fine. If you decide to thread the OD of this "compensator" to, perhaps, screw a tube over it, you might run into some trouble.

Keep in mind that reversing the ports will result in much higher recoil.

If i get serious about building this i will definitly call my local booze, smokes and guns rep and ask to make sure, but the idea being to make the sound not pound on me so much vs what ever im shooting. That being said i have never been down range(bad place to be i would assume), but is a firearm louder(lets say at 30 feet) and who/where is the sound reduction(left right, above below?)  you speak of measured from?  coudl i just put one slit in the top and leave it at that and use it to funnel the sound down range? what abotu a larger cylinder around the first with a dead air space in between. i am afraid that if my idea would actually work that im looking at a legal issue of is the soudn ebing suppressed or just re directed (a the afore mentioned EVIL SODA CANS)

Sound isn't re-directed, pressure/blast/debris is.

If the sound meter registers LESS DB's with your item attached, it's a no-no.

But we're not talking about "boom"/compression/pressure...or subjective noise changes - only ACTUAL changes.

I saw something like this in a TAPCO catalog about 10 years ago. It was intended to fit over a muzzle brake, so that the side blast would be blocked from hitting adjacent shooters. I forget how it was attached/secured- maybe it was pinned on.
