I have noticed that when I do not pull back on the charging handle & the rifle is not cocked I cannot put the selector in safe position.
Is this normal? If so which is the best way to store the rifle? It seems like it would be better to store the AR in the safe position but I also don't want to store it in a position under stress.

That's right, it won't go into safe unless the hammer is cocked back. The proper way to store your AR is with the chamber clear, gun on "fire" and pull the trigger to drop the hammer and relieve stress on the springs. And close the dust cover.

Just a nomenclature thing - It's called the "safety selector switch" on the M16 because the M16 is select-fire. On an AR15, it's just a safety switch.
