Is it bad to store a scope (RDS or acog) installed on an M4 in a padded case in the long run?
The case is padded with the usual layer of foam on top and bottom unlike pick foam where you get to pick and shape the rifle. |

I'm a nice guy, so I'll offer to dispose of it for you. The main concern would be humidity getting into the foam and attacking the springs/LPK parts, but this isn't really an issue if the case is in a climate controlled space. If you are deploying or not planning on opening the case for a long time (6-9 mo+) it wouldn't hurt to throw in one or two small dessicant bags like the ones that come in pill bottles, etc. |

Worked on a couple rifles for a friend that he kept in cases. Muzzle and a few other places had some rust.. |
| I stored my rifle in a case for what must have been 6-8 months back before I knew better. When I opened it up I had rust spots on some controls but didn't see much elsewhere....until I looked at the manufacturer/caliber/twist stamp on my barrel. Every letter was thick with rust but there wasn't a spot anywhere else on the barrel. It proved to me that I should never case a firearm even semi long term and also that a nitrided/melonited/WASP treated barrel is great at resisting rust...just don't penetrate that hard outer shell with the stamp! |
