Just how high up do I want the scope on my R-25 .308 to be?  Would  "high" rings be useable, or does it have to be 1 in. or so from the rail to the bottom of the scope like most AR specific mounts?  I'm not sure if the cheek - weld would be better with the usual "high" rings ... and I'm not using BUIS...

It sorts depends on the size of your scopes objective lens.. If you want a 50mm you quill need higher rings that a 24mm scope

If you're not using BUIS, keep the scope as low as you can given your objective size.  The hot new trend is to mount your scope way the fuck up, as a consequence many of the new shooters I hang with have no idea what a cheek weld even is.  It's more like a jaw weld these days, no wonder they can't shoot for shit.

Keep the scope low so you can smash the stock against your cheek, the way it was intended.

thanks for the advice, makes sense.  So would I be able to use a "high" ring set, e.g. Nikon brand, to mount a 1 in tube, 40mm objective scope?  They would fit the scope to the rifle fine, but would it be too low?

Merry Christmas to all!

May M. Kalashnikov rest in peace.

For proper cheek weld on most AR specific stocks, you want the centerline of your scope to be 1.5" above the top of your rail.  Higher and you tend to lift your cheek off of the stock.  Bad.  Lower and you end up scruched down and don't have a good field of view from the eyepiece.  Also bad.  Most standard AR specific mounts (not hunting rings and bases) are designed to meet the 1.5" to centerline objective, and also to be cantilevered so that both rings are mounted on the rifle receiver AND the scope can be mounted enough forward so that the rear of the eyepiece ends up over the end of your charge handle to give you both good cheek weld AND proper eye relief distance.
