i saw an AR on tv in a 3 gun challenge with a scope mount that had his regular scope, then a small red-dot mounted to the side of it sort of diagonally.  anyone know what kind of mount this is and if its any good?

SAR or Scope accesory rail.

There are a few differen't manfacturers.

Some are actually built into the mount for the primary optic, some are mounts just for the backup red dot.

Look in the EE. There are a few vendors who sell/make them.
