| Mounted up old scope and rings on new ar upper. They are too low to sight comfortably. Any tricks to figuring out what height rings you need before dropping money on parts making a guess? |

You want to have the centerline of your scope around 1.5" above the top of the receiver rail (anywhere from 1.4" to 1.6" is typical). For a scope with a 1" tube, the centerline is 0.5" from the bottom of the tube (half the diameter) so you want rings that will place the bottom of the scope tube about 1" above the receiver rail (for example, these rings are 1.1" from the base of the ring to the bottom of the scope tube, plus 0.5" = 1.6" centerline height).
Lots of companies make one-piece AR15 mounts that are at the proper height, and for normal rings you'll usually need the "extra-high" version. Larue, Bobro and American Defense are some of the better AR-specific mounts, and see some additional options here: http://www.midwayusa.com/find?sortby=1&itemsperpage=24&newcategorydimensionid=7315&pageNumber=1 |
