I'm a whimpy when it comes to gas to the face and think a side charging upper would solve the problem. However it seems that many side charging uppers have a hole where the charging handle usually goes. Do you know any that are totally blocked off at the back?

I made a simple block for my homebrewed side charger that plugs the original charging handle slot.

Nicely done Russ, and that's an understatement.  Even thought I don't know much about putting these things together,  even I recognize the work done on that receiver. Whoa!!!

Crosshill tech is what I'm using for my AR9 side I planned on suppressing it. Midway USA sells a similar version under the ar stoner brand that looks identical.

Gibbz Arms... they rock, have a cover at the back, and work with any BCG.

I recently purchased a Gibbz Arms G4 Upper which comes with a back plate from the factory...   I looked for one specifically with this feature like you are.

Can't wait to put my rifle together and try it out!

LIVE FREE ARMORY has side charging uppers that uses a standard BCG. Looks similar to the Gibbz.

You mean gas comes out the back end? No I'm not being mean.
I never thought about that. I just feel a little nudge from "the kick". Even when
I forget to use my eye protection I don't feel any gas. Are you shooting left handed
from a right handed gun? Again I am being totally serious. Forgive me if this sounds insensitive.

When the gas key disconnects from the gas tube there is a momentary rush of expanding gases that blows rearward inside of the receiver and follow the charging handle channel.  In suppressed guns, this is even more pronounced.  Ever hear of the Gas Buster charging handle?  It deflects these gasses away from the CH opening.

yep

only time I have found it to be an issue is with a suppressed AR.

with an adjustable gas block even then you can reduce the gas flow to a tolerable level
