i have 2 ar15s. both with aimpoints. i'm selling a pistol and was thinking of selling 1 aimpoint and buying a quality 1-4 variable (as per my thread in the optics section). do this or, keep both rifles as is, with aimpoints, buy 1500 rds of ammo and get my variable and a recce a year from now?

Do you ever shoot > 100 yards? If you do, a quality optic isn't a bad idea. Otherwise, spend it on ammo.

I say keep them the way they are and build a RECCE with the 1-4 as funds allow. That swhat I would do anyway.

my local range goes to 200 yds but i have to admit i usually stay at 100 or less. maybe because i have 1x optics only. my eyes arent the best after 100yds.

both?

Depends on how much ammo you have. Low on ammo, buy ammo. Got shittons? Get an optic.

i have about 700 rds of m855, 400 rds of 75 gr prvi and 100 rds of black hills.

To me it would be depending on what type of aimpoint you have. If they are the older model aimpoints then it would be an option because you would be somewhat upgrading. If it's a micro t1 in a larue mount, then let me know how much you want for it...

Really it all depends on what you really want and if you shoot over a hundred yards on a consistant basis. You should be able to hit almost anything at 100 yards with your aimpoints.

ETA: After reading your post on your ammo supply, I change my answer to ammo and mags if you don't have a good supply of those either.

id be selling my ml2 in a larue and keeping my t1. i can shoot fine at 100yds with either aimpoint. 200 yds is another story. targets are much harder to see for me. looks like a blur. 100yds is easy for me though(not grouping though)

I posted an ETA on my post above but I'll post this anyway.

AMMO I would at least try and keep a couple of thousand on hand. If you shoot very much at all that 1100+rounds that you have isn't going to last very long.

good point. ammo does go fast and the prvi and black hills is being saved for when i do get a recce or spr in the future. ammo it is then. i was leaning that way because im scared to shoot due to my low ammo count right now. i have about 30 preban mags (new york)
