The bottom line is, how much money do I have to spend to see holes in the paper at 200 yds.  What are some good options.

First question: are you sure that there are holes in the paper?    JUST KIDDING.

Next question: is this for casual use once in a while, or more frequent use with long sessions?  Meade makes a pretty decent 20-60X for casual use and it's under $75.00.  I've looked through other bargain scopes and I get eye fatigue after 30 minutes or so.  The next step up would be something like the Leupold, Burris, and a few others in the $200 - $400 range.  These will have good optics for a-day-at-the-range, and most hunting situations.  From there it's just a question of how much you want to spend.

I strongly recommend staying away from BARSKA, NC Star, and Vivitar.  Their glass SUCKS!  I have no experience with other brands, so I can't comment.

I just need something for when the family and I go out to the in laws back field and sling the lead.  We shoot the pistols from 50-100ft.  We shoot the rifles from around 100-200 yds.  We mix it it up a lot.  Its mainly family bonding time.

Konus makes a pretty good spotting scope.  The glass is clear and the scope is well made.

I have a $100 dicks 20x50 bushnell . If I use shoot-n-see targets I can see the hole but cant see on black and white targets. .( Get a steel taget and you wont need a spotting scope lol!)

This is the answer if you are on a budget.

Konus sounds great but $200+. Anything that works in the $100 range? I understand that you get what you pay for, but what is the best option for a $100 budget? Thanks!

Another vote for the Konus.  I just picked one up and am very impressed considering the pricepoint.

I've used a friend's Konus and the optics are much better than the price point would indicate; however, his had one of the internal lenses just fall out of place.  No rough handling, not dropped, lens just fell out of place.

I did an incredible amount of research and found this too. All the benchrest and long range shooters basically say to buy a Konus until you can afford a Swarovski or Zeiss. I'd go with the scope with the largest objective you can afford, to make the exit pupil as large as possible.

That said, I have a Zeiss Victory Varipoint 2.5-10×50 rifle scope that also lets me see 5.56 holes at 200 yards. But it is a bit more than the Konus and when you start getting heat waves and stuff downrange, it isn't quite as useful for that.

For 200y it really helps to hang a white sheet a few feet behind the paper target.

+1

Get a Konus and spend the rest on a good stand. Without a good stand the image will be very shaky once you get up to 60x

I've also found that a quality rifle scope is more than enough to see bullet holes at 200yds.  Of course the scope will cost you more than a Konus spotting scope.

I tried a couple of cheap spotting scopes.
First, an NCStar. Worthless beyond 100 yards.
Next I bought a Vortex model that has been discontined, $250 scope for $150. I thought I had really scored.
Wasn't much better than the NCStar, really.

Now I have a Bushnell Legend HD 20-60x80.
ED (extremely low dispersion) glass.
Amazing optics for the price.

Unfortunately $450 or so.

With any optics, you don't get good performace for a little money.

I've learned my lesson; my least expensive rifle scopenow  is a Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24x50 FFP, around $1k list.
There is no substitute for quality in this area.
