How cheap have you assembled one?
Please post pics and a parts/price list.

Here's mine.

Used Anvil arms lower w/parts kit installed. $85
Used stripped upper. $40
Gas tube $12
Delta C clip & dust cover. $7

$119 D2 griptillian. Buddy had a complete 16" take off barrel hanging in his garage and I asked what he wanted for it. He said my benchmade, I said sold!

The traded parts have value and must be included in the net cost. If not, I've got a couple free rifles, hell I have a rifle that owes me money if that's the case.

I agree wholeheartedly.  If the value of a part is difficult to determine, I understand, but somewhere along the line it was paid for.

All the freebies are worth about the same as the ones you paid for - so your true cost is really 2X - at least.

$69 Natmil lower
$59 blemished PSA upper
$99 AImsurplus BCG
20 inch Sig barrel (free, never fired,  got it for changing out a friends barrel, I got to keep the take off, plus MOE hand guards, and gas tube)
$68 LPK (spikes)
A2 stock laying around

total: $295 (add $50 for transfer fee if you want)

Agreed that traded parts are worth something, maybe I should have emphasized "out of pocket" expense.
anybody that has upgraded, built or assembled an AR ends up with a box of extra parts and to me, until I can build something out of them, they have no real value.
I don't know how many times I've donated a part or two to a friend who needed it for a build.
Regardless, let's keep the thread fun. Keep posting budget builds.

My best was a $560 preban.

Used, out of spec Oly lower.  Old Oly upper with an M16A2 surplus barrel.  Traded an A2 stock for a CS stock.

So I had a preban M16A2 clone with a Colt CS stock for $560 + my A2 stock.

Sold that bitch for $2k, kept the CS stock.

OP, all traded for Components, and left over parts from other Builds or swaps, have a Cost associated to them that you didn't need to purchase. It still adds to the end cost results.

I disagree. We all have scrap parts laying around that accumulate over time, and we don't really consider them to have any value. Re-purposing them into a new build is essentially using free parts. I think the key here is that the out of pocket cost is extremely low.

If I buy an $800 rifle and take off a pair of $10 handguards, I don't consider the rifle to cost $790. It still cost me $800 and I just have an extra pair of handguards laying around.

I figured I had better pick up a couple stripped lowers before the Gov. signed the AW ban here in CA, and right before he Veto'ed the bill I picked up a couple stripped blem's from PSA for 59.99 each (wanted a couple for my boys just in case).

And now that the bill was veto'ed, I figured I would grow the lowers into rifles and give them both to my boys for Christmas this year (youngest will be 18 years old in December).  Picked up a pair of P-Tac MOE LPK's last week for $109.99 and just pulled the trigger on a pair of daily deal PSA CMV MOE 16" 5.56mm 1:7 Carbine Length M4 Profile w/ M16 Bolt Carrier Group and Charging Handle for $399.99.

So for a complete rifle with full Magpul MOE furniture...

$  59.99 - PSA (Blemished) stripped lower (x2)
$109.99 - P-Tac AR-15 MOE Lower Build Kit (x2)
$399.99 - PSA CMV MOE 16" 5.56mm 1:7 Carbine Length M4 Profile w/ M16 Bolt Carrier Group and Charging Handle (x2)

For a subtotal of $569.97 per rifle ($1,139.94 total for a pair).

$569.97 for full Magpul MOE furniture is not too shabby.  I'll post pics after Christmas since I will NOT be building these rifles - I plan on spending Christmas day this year teaching my boys how to assemble an AR-15 :)

(edit - BTW all parts listed above are still on sale at PSA as of today, 10/25/13)

Seriously.  I like the idea of this thread but some of you guys have suspect accounting skills.

1.  I had a spare Colt lower and a spare Colt upper in my parts bin.  Slapped them together, boom!  Cost = $0

2.  Did some consulting work for a client.  He had no cash so have gave me a Colt 6920.  I swapped the charging handle for a Raptor.  Cost = $85

3.  Was upgrading my tools and traded my old ones for a complete Noveske.  Sold the Magpul grip for $30 and replaced it with a BCM grip for $20.  Cost = negative $10

We're not trying to rain on any parades here, but these parts are fungible, and have some value (regardless of how the parts were acquired).  If these spare parts that were successfully used to build a rifle are truly void of value, I'll happily take them off your hands, and I'll even pay shipping.  You essentially traded a Colt 6920 for your time and effort in consulting, and unless you would have volunteered your time, your work has real value.

I guess we should probably stop trolling this, as I like the idea, but maybe the OP should have something about these builds being constructed with spare parts, and include additional monies spent to finish.

Wideners special ATI full build kit sitting at home - http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=100001378 - 440 Shipped
PSA Blem lower ordered during the free shipping spree - 60 + FFL transfer @ 15 when it comes in.

Thus far about 520 spent.

It will still need sights. Looking at DD fixed @ 120.

Will be over 600 once done.

This thread is not all too honest though. Trades and such shouldn't qualify as free, unless the item in trade was a gift or something.
