I'm looking for sub moa commercial ammo at a decent price.

What ammo are you getting sub moa at 100 yards with?

Most accurate factory ammo I've shot was 75gr BTHP Hornady factory match.

It's funny because there's a thread right next to this one about someone getting poor results from their rifle with Hornady match. Assuming operator error isn't the issue, just goes to show the importance of trying out different flavors to find something that works.

I would look at something using 69 and 77gr SMK's. Such as Federal Gold Medal Match

I second this

I get sub MOA 5 shot groups with Fiocchi 50 grain VMax ballistic tip.

I was considering getting a case of

Federal XM193F Brown Box 5.56mm 55gr FMJ

or

Lake City 5.56 NATO 62 Grain XM855 FMJ

Would any of these meet my criteria? Or am I getting mixed up? Is only match grade ammo capable of sub moa at 100 yards.

I don't think either M193 or M855 will give you <1 MOA - maybe not even <2 MOA.

That ammo is 2-3MOA at best

Try THIS

Its the cheapest "match" grade ammo around

I've tried a lot of ammo, but what works best for me is Fiocchi with 50 gr Hornady V-max bullets.  Got some from Midway for $36/100.  It's not cheap, but it is the most accurate out of the three rifles I've tried it with.

I would start with that, but if price is a problem then get the privi 69gr match. Try a couple boxes and it should be what your looking for

I've had good luck with 50grn Vmax as well, loaded in Black Hills blue box ammo.  This is with a 1/8 twist.

I shoot 55gr hornady steel match. I get MOA with it. It is great stuff and very affordable.

What kind of rifle are you shooting this out of? You realize that you're not getting sub-MOA out of a rifle that costs less than $2000 as a rule of thumb, right?

In order
Blue Box Black Hills 77gr SMK
White Box Black Hills 5.56mm 77gr SMK
Blue Box Black Hills 75gr

I do think the SMK bullet is the best for accuracy

Nice gun, but no guarantee for 1 MOA even with the best ammo.

For a sub-MOA 100 yard group I would stick with the VMAX or Blitzking loads, 55gr and lighter. The little varmint ballistic tip rounds are incredibly accurate.

XM193F isn't anything close to sub-MOA. Its specs from Federal list a 2 MOA -RADIUS- at 200 yards, which is probably a 6" extreme spread group. So figure if you are getting a 3" extreme spread at 100 yards from XM193 you're doing good to the limits of the ammunition. Anything smaller is gravy.

The heavy OTM rounds really don't do their thing until you're past 200 or so.

I wouldn't buy Hornady OTMs right now. Way too many stores about crappy accuracy from them as of late.

If you want cheap(er) sub-moa ammunition, start reloading and doing ladder tests.

Try several different flavors of ammo to find one that your gun likes.  A RRA varmint I had shot Hornady match and Fed GMM match OK, but it preferred Wolf Gold 75 grn HPBT.  That was fantastic because the Wolf was half the price of the Fed.

When cruising the cheap ammo looking for best accuracy I agree with looking at the vmax loaded stuff regardless of brand.

The Hornady steel practice ammo is great. Its the cheapest match ammo available.

We load the 75 grain Hornady OTM bullets in reloadable LC brass with crimped boxer primers for a couple bucks more per box. We also load the 77 and 69 SMK to 5.56 pressure and velocity.

Thanks,

Mike

Neither of those will come close to 1 moa, if you are luck they will be sub 4 moa.

IMHO, If you want sub-moa , the answer is start to reload your own.  Cheaply priced ammo is cheap for a reason. The components are held to lower consistency standards which will result in less accuracy.   Besides, load development gives you more trigger time and isn't that idea anyway.

If that is one of RRA complete rifles it's guaranteed to shoot 3/4 MOA.  Like everyone else has said it's going to require trial and error.

Hey Mike,
I have several years of experience firing Black Hills 5.56MM ammo: MK 262 MOD 0, MK 262 MOD 1, SECONDS,  AMU loads, etc. but have ZERO experience with your loadings. And unfortunately, I don't see much actual info on groups fired with your 5.56MM loads. Show us some groups fired with your 69gr. SMK, 70gr. Barnes TSX, 75gr. Hornady OTM, & 77gr. SMK loads from accurized AR15/M16 rifles. 5.56MM shooters are always looking for affordable/accurate ammunition.

                                                                                                                                                    TIA,
                                                                                                                                                    Carey

Edit: Finally found some 69gr. SMK & 77gr. SMK groups on the Hide this morning; looks very promising. But I want to see for myself exactly what this 5.56MM ammunition has to offer accuracy-wise so ordered a few boxes of 5.56MM 70gr. Barnes TSX, 75gr. Hornady OTM, & 77gr. Sierra MatchKing OTM. Will put it up against my gold standard of 5.56MM accuracy, Black Hills 5.56MM 77gr. SMK based MK 262 MOD 1. I have a highly accurized SPR type rifle to test with. Frank White at CLE chambered the 18" full-heavy 1x7.7 Krieger barrel specifically for 5.56MM MK 262 type loadings. ]http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2725170&page=5]
