Ok, I have a surefire front rail system on my M-4.  I think this is a good rail system, am I wrong? I need a light, what is the difference between the MU light and the Scout system?   I.E. price, lumens, design, ruggedness.    Also who has good prices on these babies. I am leo and don't want to pay those crazy retail prices on surefire.

thanks

The M73 is a good rail system (so your fine there). The SCOUT light is a very good weaponlight (especially if weight is an issue). I do not think it is as rugged as the MU system though (personal opinion). You also have more options with the MU system (6V, 9V, 12V, turbo head, etc). There are a couple dealers on this board that give LE discounts...

The M73 rail system is a nice setup and will certainly cover most needs, so don't worry about that.

As for which light to go with, that has to be something for you to decide.  First off, you don't have to pay MSRP just talk to your favorite Surefire dealer first and see what you find.  Second, I myself and others offer LE/Military discounts so let us know.

Now for the specific differences of comparing the Scout light and say a M951C MU system:

Basic specs -

M651C Scout - 6v system using the MN03 (60 lumen - approx. battery runtime of 75 min.) or the optional lower output MN02 (25 lumen - approx. battery runtime of 2 - 2.5 hours) lamps. The weight w/ batteries is 4.0 ounces (thumbscrew mount) and the length is 4.65".

M951C MU - 6v M95x MU systems use the P60 (65 lumen - approx. battery runtime of 1hr.) & P61 (120 lumen - approx. battery runtime of 20-25 min.) lamps. The weight w/ batteries is 9.1 ounces (dual thumbscrew mount) and the length is 6.125".

Options -

Scout light -

Switching to the MN02 can provide long runtime with excellent light output that within 10-15% of the MN02 lamp.

KL1 1w LED head - 3-4hrs. of optimal output that's suitable for weapons use under 25-35 yards.  Lengthy degrading output after 4 hours but those stages are less than tolerable for a weaponslight.

KL4 5w LED head - approx. 65 lumen output with optimal 75-90 min. runtime that's suitable for weapons use out to 40-50 yards max.

M951/2 MU series -

P61 lamp will yield approx. 15-20% brighter beam, better flood & greater range though battery runtime is diminished to 20-25 min.

KL5 5w LED head - rated approx. 65 lumen output (though it may exceed that rating) with optimal 60-75 min. runtime that's suitable for weapons use out to 50 yards.

Capable  of being upgraded to a 9v M96x series or to the Turbohead M97x/M98x series configuration.

Tapeswitch and XM series activation solutions are available now.

Price -

For a M651C or a M951C they'll be fairly close in cost.

Opinion -

The MU system is one that gives you many options and proven full weaponsgrade performance. It will provide ideal output for most scenarios and is widely parts compatible with other Surefire lights such as the G2/6P/Z2/etc.  There are many configuration options and accessories available.

The Scout light is ideal for shorter ranges, lighter use and where a smaller, lighter weight weapon is preferred.  Compatability is still achievable but the Executive series is a bit less common when it comes to parts availability.

I can honestly say both systems are favored for certain roles but having more than one rifle makes deciding much easier.

Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help.

As mentioned above, the SF M73 is a very good system, expecially for the money.

The MU systems will be much more modular and be able to accept more powerful high output lamp assemblies.  The different segments of the MU systems can be used using the same body if the need arises to change the configuration of the light.  The Scout lights will be limited to a 6v system with a choice of a 65 lumen LED or a 60 lumen incandescent lamp.  Although I have heard of components for a scoutlight to allow it to use diferent lamps and/or turn it into a 9v syztem, but for the cost and gain in weight I imagine it would be more economical to go with the MU light if you feel the need to allow for more powerful lamp assemblies.  The scout light has a choice of either a single thumbscrew attachment system or a single thumbscrew offset and adjustable attachment system.  The MU series has a choice of dual thumbscrew or throw lever attachemnts.

Oops, BF beat me to a more detailed description.  Both BF and Grant are great people to deal with and will both give you the best prices anywhere.

Is the LaRue mount compatible with both the Scout and M95 series?

I would have to look at again to verify. It just so happens that I should have more Scout lights in this week!

The M671UE05 will be equipped with the 5w KL4 and a detachable tapeswitch but this variant has still not been released.  SF has teased us for nearly a year now with that tapeswitch but apparently it's not a priority. The tapeswitch cord is already developed and being used on the XM series t/c's so it's so it shouldn't be that hard to finish the deal on the t/c.

Grant & BrightFlashlights,

Thanks for the product descriptions!

They will help me in deciding which Scout model I would like to run for my carbine(s).

The tapeswitches are out for the Scout / E series lights but getting them individually right now is a problem.
