trying not to sound dumb, what is the purpose of the T marks on a upper receiver

Index marks for mounting stuff.

So you can remember, "I have my Eotech mounted on T-x, and my scope mount's front screw is on T-y, and my BUIS is mounted on T-z." And put them all back in the same places when you remount them.
