| ok need some opinions, I am right handed on my AR I usually mount my light on the right side of the rifle as I shoulder it, I have a friend that is a swat officer he says it should be on the left side, I use a one point sling on my rifles so when the weapon is at rest i thought by mounting the light on the right side it is away from my body and can't get hung up on my clothing, or bang into me , he says by mounting it away from my body side it can get caught on other objects, so my question is there a right way or wrong way to mount a light on your gun, I am using a pressure switch, the light is a surefire 951. thanks |

Light positioning is a very personal decision.
A 100% ideal location is 12 O Clock. That way its between the sights and the bore, so it's never obstructed in any way. That being said, there's very little in this world that's ideal. I had an x300 at 12 O' Clock, but when I added an IR laser it was no longer feasible. Dealing with type/size of light, any peripherals, weapon type and forearm, slings, and personal ergonomics moves light position farther and farther away from ideal. In order by best positioning: 12, 1130 and 130, 3 and 9, 430 and 730, and lastly 6. Outside of that, it's really up to personal preference. If you're right handed and running a pushbutton tailcap, 9 might be best, however, there are a lot of people that feel they're best able to activate it at 3. So, to reiterate, light mounting, while there are some pretty basic good theories, in the end comes down to personal preference. SWAT SOPs not withstanding. ETA: I'm using a Scout at 3, but it's on a pressure switch. I'm considering moving it to the left and putting a push button tailcap on it to replace the pressure switch. |

Take it for what the grain of salt that it's worth, but I once heard that righties "should" have it on the right, because if they're shooting at the light they're shots are less likely to hit you than if the light is in front of your body.
I don't know how much I agree. I also prefer the 12 o'clock mount, but I don't like that it blocks my view a bit compared to right, left and bottom mounts. Mines on the right because that's the easiest place for me to flip it on, but on my AR pistol it'll probably go on the bottom. |
| I run mine on the left (9 o'clock). I don't use pressure pads and both my dedicated weapon lights are accuated by a tail cap button. Having them on the left allows me to manipulate the button without having to bring my support hand all the way around the top of the barrel. |

Thats the first i heard of it and it actually make sense OP I got my light at the 11 oclock position using an offset mount and im a righty.I dont use a tape switch just a clicky and my left thumb is what i use to turn the light on.I have tried different spots and this is the one im most comfortable with. Just like what the previous poster said its all about personal preference. |
