| I picked up my new ar-15 and shot it for a while yesterday and took it apart to clean it. I took out the bolt and tried to disassemble it. The firing pin retainer pin isn't a pin! Its actually a very small flat head screw. I can't even get the screw out. I called who made it for me and he said that there isn't a reason to take the firing pin out to clean it, He said just lube the bolt and just clean the bolt and lube it. I can't even find a bolt with a firing pin retainer that isn't a pin. Help me out here. |

Sounds like some tapped the cotter pin retaining hole and installed a screw instead.
The cotter pin is retained in the carrier via the inside of the upper receiver, so no the mod was not needed. Never the less, the bolt needs to be pulled from the carrier so you can clean the parts (read the crap in the firing pin channel needs to be cleaned out, much less the other internal parts as well). With the bolt out, if a standard cotter pin will fit back in and pressure hold it's self in the channel, use the standard cotter firing pin retainer instead of the bolt afterwards. |

I would want to trade in the bolt carrier group.... You most certainly do need to clean inside of the bolt carrier group. And having a screw there is not necessary, it only results in having non-standard parts. Was this a business? Let us know who they are, advice like this shows an extreme lack of knowledge. |
