Can somebody please give me some details as to exactly how you got this thing on?  I saw suggestions about rubber mallets and 2 people, but no details.  My fingers are killing me, and this thing is just barely on the rail, and I'm really considering just taking this stupid thing off for good.  Thanks in advance!

use the zip ties that came with it...

use the square locking end of the zip ties (there should be 4) to hold the crossbars down... then use a rubber mallet to tap it into position...

once its in position remove the zip ties and it should lock onto the rail

Get the "Grip Chips" from Tango Down.  They are made to fit into the spaces above the locking tabs to hold them down while you slide the VFG on the rail.  I used to have a lot of trouble with this.  But, I got a couple sets at their booth at Shot Show and they are tits!  1000X easier now.
