after reading several threads about the cost of barrels and the armorer involvement ... and the fact that I want to change quickly by myself has brought me to consider getting another upper - i have a RRA 16" 5.56
i want something that will shoot further accurately - so i am first considering getting a 20" HBAR upper - flattop - so I can mount a long-range scope on it. however, i am aware that some instabilities exist in getting 5.56 out over 800m. so ... tell me your opinions concerning other calibers. what is available and accurate for a semi-reasonable price. if i were to lean in a different caliber direction, i feel more comfortable with .308 (7.62x51) as that seem to be more readily and reasonably plentiful ammo. |

If you want to shoot very accurately at long range just buy a bolt gun. 308 bolt gun is a good way to go. You can get into a good bolt rifle for the cost of a premium AR-15 barrel.
The cost of building an AR that has repeatable accuracy past 800 yards would be prohibitive in comparison. Building a 308 AR would be very expensive and you would not shoot as accurately as a bolt action. |
| This with 1 in 7 twist. If you want a .223 AR. If you are looking for outstanding accuracy and longer ranges, go with .308 bolt gun. |

I sold one of those, brand new, with a new M5 RAS for about $475 a few months before the election. I had an identical one that I actually shot, it would not be my choice for punching paper past 800. |

What are you shooting at that's 800 yards away ?
If you are talking about something for punching paper I would agree with everyone else that the .223 is not the best way to go. If you just want a very accurate setup and you threw out an arbitray number like 800 yards then I'd ask you to really think about what this gun will be used for. Ammo selection and the overal budget can effect what is right for you. If I was planning to buy a rig for 800 yard shots that needed enough oomf to kill whatever it was I was shooting at I'd look at bolt gun in .308 or 300 Winchester Magnum. If you want as close to the above guns accuracy at a reasonable price in an AR15 platform then I'd look at the 6.5 Grendel or the 6.8SPC. |
